Why Teaching Small Business Management In Schools Is So Important For Our Future
Small business management is incredibly important to the well being of any industrialized nation. Although the media seems to concentrate almost exclusively on the big name companies which are known throughout the land, the small and medium sized businesses account for a far greater percentage of the economy. Despite this, there is still a mistaken belief amongst many students at business school that it is only the household names who can pay the big money. This is simply not true, and a student of business needs to be aware of all possible opportunities, in small and large business alike.
Business management is a skill which is in huge demand right across the entire field of business. If anything, the demand for highly skilled managers is greater amongst small and medium sized businesses, and there is no doubt that the entire economy would benefit from a concentration of resources in these areas. By producing highly educated and skilled leaders in the small business sector, we can encourage growth in an area of the economy which is becoming increasingly important.
Professional business management skills are vital at all levels of business, but they need to be tailored to the needs of the individual company, and many strategies which have proven highly effective in big business will stretch the resources of a small business just too far. This is why it is so important for business schools to offer courses which are in line with the true reality of today's economy. The small and medium sized business needs not only to be covered, it needs to be covered in such a way that its needs are properly met.
Business and management skills are more acutely needed at the level of the small business, as there is far less room for the business to recover from drastic errors. It is so important to understand how to serve the company's existing customer base with the technologies, skills and resources available, and then to ensure that any expansion is manageable. If a company expands at too fast a rate, it may find its resources stretched beyond its ability to cope with its existing customer base. At this point, the company is potentially in trouble.
In most cases, these problems can be avoided with skilled small business management. At this moment in time, there are not enough managers with the necessary skills and experience serving the business community. This situation needs to be changed at the level of education, with college courses focusing more on the needs of the majority of businesses within the economy. Only when this happens will the future begin to look brighter for the section of the economy which is now most vital for sustained employment and growth. A lot of lives will be enhanced in the future if we can bring a new level of skill to small business management.
